Eating with New Dentures

Eating without Dentures or Teeth

People may put off getting new dentures for a variety of reasons. They may have perhaps been accustomed to ill-fitting dentures or worn-down dentures. There could also be possible financial constraints or, the denture wearer has simply become fed up with ill-fit dentures and given up trying to eat with them.

Did you know that chewing may need to be relearned? Some people may overcompensate with any of their natural teeth that may remain. For instance, chewing on the natural anterior (front) teeth because there aren't any posterior (back) teeth. We can teach you how to eat with your new dentures with practice and persistence. Here are some pointers for using your new denture while eating.

As digestion starts in the mouth, eating with no teeth can lead to gum irritation and gastrointestinal problems. The process of chewing helps send signals to your gastrointestinal system that the digestive process is to begin. Food that is not properly chewed will take longer for our bodies to digest which could lead to missed nutrients, indigestion, and flatulence. Our bodies may lose out on important vitamins it needs to keep us moving.

Consuming Food with New Dentures

You might need to use some strategy when eating with the new dentures that you may not have previously considered. Natural teeth have roots that connect the tooth to your jawbone. The base of a denture either rests freely on top of your gums or is secured in place by an anchoring tooth (partial dentures). The difference means you might need to adjust how you bite and chew. Natural teeth have a propensity to pull forward or sideways when biting. To avoid the dentures wobbling or moving when you eat, practice using both sides of your mouth simultaneously.

6 Tips for eating with new dentures

  1. Bite with your back teeth. If at all possible, attempt to chew and bite with your back teeth most of the time to evenly distribute food across your mouth's two sides. Try not to bite with the front teeth since this can weaken the upper plate's suction.

  2. Avoid sticky or chewy foods at first and start with softer foods like fish, cooked veggies, oats, and scrambled eggs. This will enable you to retrain your mouth to chew slowly on both sides to keep your dentures in place. You'll be able to add more items to your regimen as time goes on.

  3. Cut food into smaller pieces. Because digestion starts in the mouth, it's crucial to consume smaller portions of food that you can chew fully and slowly. A healthy diet and the ability to chew your food are vitally necessary for overall mental and physical well-being.

  4. Food Temperature: Test hot foods on your lips before eating them, as dentures may mask how hot your food is and cause a burn. Holding hot liquids in your mouth may loosen your bottom denture.

  5. Sip water together with your meals. Both chewing and digestion will benefit from this.

  6. Enjoy your meal while seated. If you're used to eating on the move, be aware that you'll probably need to eat slowly at first. Be patient while adjusting to your new dentures.
